The 3D Update

A long time later, we finally have another devlog to share.

The biggest update is the pivot from using card art in-game to actual 3D models. This is probably the sort of style everyone wants anyway, looking at the original RED: Shadow Maggots video. It also allows for more creative freedom since we can animate with 3D models rather than 2D card art. However, all chances of this game getting any monetization is pretty much off the table (save for any agreement with Lord Gaben himself).

If you want a quick demo video, here’s one on Twitter

Another update is a major gameplay addition where some maggots will be given a charge attack rather than the normal quick-time button press. This requires you to hold down your finger/cursor to charge up your power (up to 3 times). The longer you charge for, the more powerful the attack, but missing the timing window makes you deal diminished damage. For a video on this mechanic, check out the associated Twitter post.

Now then, time for another FAQ. Click here if you want to read the previous FAQ.

Q: When’s a demo/full release coming out?

A: God, hopefully soon. We’d like to have a playable demo featuring the new mechanics and some 3D characters at some point, maybe within the coming months.

Q: What will be available in the demo (if there is one)?

A: The scope for that will probably just feature the same 3 wave battle like in the original game jam build. Probably including most of the combat mechanics implemented with 3 set characters playable.

Q: Will the 2D card art still be in the game?

A: Absolutely, they’ll still be featured in the menu screens, party setup menus, lootbox animations, and dialogue sequences.

Q: Can you add X character into the game?

A: No guarantees, we can only promise most of the original cast in Eltorro’s RED: Shadow Maggots spoof video (image below). Maybe other characters can be added as “DLC” after the base game is done.

If you’d like to get more frequent updates (more than Itch at least), do follow me on Twitter where I post new things related to RED: Shadow Maggots and game dev in general!
