Crit Canteens

Hey, hey, it’s a weekday update (took me until Friday though)! I figured posting updates on weekdays would probably be better since I can dedicate the weekend to actually work on the update rather than work on the update post.

Cool, Visible Updates

Crit Canteen System

Critical hits are infamous in Team Fortress 2 and are an often-seen mechanic in many RPGs. However, just having yet-another-critical system would’ve been boring. Our shake-up of the system can be introduced in two parts.

1. Super Critical Attacks Super Criticals are the “super moves” of RED: Shadow Maggots characters.

  • Activating them requires your character to have their critical hit chance at 100% at the time of their attack execution.
  • Super Criticals do not consume your critical hit buffs unless their associated effects explicitly state that they do.

2. Crit Canteens Crit Canteens are a new feature added as of this devlog that acts as a bank of your expended critical hit chance buffs.

  • When an effect that increases your character’s crit rate expires, a fraction of their expired crit rate buff is banked in your Canteen Charge
    • The amount banked is dependent on the class of the character (Attackers receive the smallest, Supports receive the most)
    • Crit rate buffs include the temporary crit rate buff gained upon getting a perfect quick-time event activation
    • Missing a perfect quick-time event provides a smaller buff
  • When your Canteen Charge exceeds the maximum amount (default being 25%) the charge you have stored will be converted to 1 Crit Canteen
  • Your Crit Canteens can be given to your characters to give them a temporary crit rate buff equivalent to the amount listed in the Canteen Charge window
    • This buff expires at the end of the turn and is not banked in your Canteen Charge

Hopefully, this all helps make the gameplay more interesting, but whether or not it is will be something revealed through playtesting!

Revamped UI

The in-battle character info display has been updated to better convey relevant details about your character (including all the new crit logic above). Not to mention it’s been designed to look more TF2-style!

I understand that there are people who probably want to see more character-focused updates but rest assured that those are still being worked on! While work is being done to finish up the Pyro character, we’re beginning work on adding a playable Support-class character to help balance out the roster for the demo release.

Thanks for all the support and we hope you stick around for more!
